Community Based Research Projects for 2014

  • Healthy Corner Store Initiative (Walnut Park) - A research project that examined the experiences of Regal Market, a store in a food desert in St. Louis participating in the University of Missouri Extension's Healthy Corner Store initiative. The project also included research on community gardens in Walnut Park. Observations and in-depth interviews were done to develop an understanding of what healthy eating means to people who shop in a food desert for nutritional food.
  • Gateway Arch Accessibility Project - A research project done studying the accessibility challenges to people with disability attempting to visit the Gateway Arch in St. Louis before the renovation in 2014 that resulted in the most accessible garage's destruction.
  • Landmark Heritage Project - Examined the issues faced in preserving landmark buildings in North St. Louis. Site observations and in-depth interviews with leaders in the St. Louis preservation community provided key insights into the challenges of conserving St. Louis landmarks.
  • Community Supported Agriculture - A research project that examined the challenges of community supported agriculture by observing and interviewing management in one CSA organization (Fair Shares) engaged in providing its members with organic food from local farmers. Farmers, CSA management, and members were interviewed.
  • Fruit My Cube - A research project that focused on a subscription program offered by a local farmer's market. Fresh fruit and vegetables are delivered to office environments to encourage healthy eating by employees. The founder of the program and several customers were interviewed to develop an understanding of what healthy eating means to them and what motivated them to participate.
